Hamburg Airport serves Germany´s second biggest city and is situated only 8 km from the city center. The greater Hamburg region is an economically strong and fast growing area, generally acknowledged as Germany´s trade, traffic and media capital.
In 2000, Hamburg Airport expects 10 Mio. passengers. The airport focuses on three spheres of activity: first aviation, second ground handling as well as other services for passengers and airlines and third non-aviation activities, such as rent and concessions.
Over the past 5 years the airport has evolved from a single slightly administrative run company to a group of enterprises. The group consists of a body and just under 10 subsidiaries. The strategy of outsourcing parts of the company and turning them into independently operating units is generally recognized as "the Hamburg model". The future aim is to develop these companies at the airport but also at other locations. Furthermore, Hamburg Airport wants to intensify its relations with other European airports and strives to become a benchmark in further areas.
Last year, Hamburg Airport produced 29% of its revenue from non-aviation activities. The aim is to steadily increase this share.
On the aviation side, the airport is constantly working on intensifying and differentiating its range of services within Europe as well as establishing new long-haul routes.
At present, the airport is undergoing a major modernization programme, mainly on its landside infrastructure. In 2005, terminal 2 will be replaced by a modern, far bigger building, which will also have direct access to Hamburg´s suburban railway system. In addition, a 200-bedroom hotel and further 4000 carparking spaces will be available adjacent to both terminals.
