Net Zero a non-negotiable for airports

Prague: European airports today marked significant progress in their climate efforts, with 328 airports in 38 countries now committed to achieving Net Zero emissions under their direct control. Among them, 36 airports have already achieved this milestone.
As the European airport industry gathers in Prague for the 36th ACI EUROPE Annual Congress & General Assembly, the latest update of the European Airport Industry Net Zero Resolution highlights growth in both participation and ambition across the airport sector.
The latest update reveals that:
- 328 airports across 38 countries have now committed to reach Net Zero by 2050 or earlier. These airports account for 83% of European passenger traffic1.
- 14 new airports have joined this collective commitment compared to last year, with new signatories including: Alghero, Florence, Olbia Costa Smeralda, Pisa, Tirana, Avignon‑Provence, Caen‑Carpiquet, Deauville, Rouen, Atatürk, Dalaman, Rize-Artvin, Limak‑Kosovo and Bacău airports.
- 36 airports have already achieved Net Zero for emissions under their direct control (scopes 1 & 2) – more than double the number reported last year.
Originally launched in 2019, the ACI EUROPE Net Zero Resolution2 commits airports to achieving net zero carbon for emissions under their direct control. These commitments need to be underpinned by clear and publicly available roadmaps detailing measurable goalposts towards delivering on that objective. To date, 109 decarbonisation roadmaps have been submitted to the publicly available repository, including 19 new and updated roadmaps covering 48 airports3.
The Resolution remains one of the most ambitious collective climate commitments in the transport industry, and continues to drive concrete climate action across Europe's airport network. Crucially, 106 airports have set a target of achieving Net Zero by 2030, anticipating global climate targets by two decades.
Olivier Jankovec, Director General of ACI EUROPE, said: “At a time when climate action is facing increasing political, economic and social pressures, European airports continue to demonstrate that decarbonisation remains a strategic priority. The steady growth in participation in the Net Zero Resolution and the increasing number of airports achieving Net Zero show that our commitment is steadfast. For European airports, pursuing Net Zero emissions is non‑negotiable as this is about our license to operate and grow.”
